Ring gear spacer

I've people selling ring gear spacers to allow use of a 3 series gear on a 2 series carrier. I was wondering if any know wether or not they work very good and how well do they hold up to abuse?

they make the gear louder.... the 10bolt is weak anyway, so you'll probly break alot of diffrent things before you break the spacer....so strength isnt an issue... but it is a good bit louder because of it.

Louder, hmmm i wonder why? What i didn't like about the design is that the gear would fit onto the turned section of the carrier. I wonder if thats why they are louder?

I ran one with 4.10 gears for a year until the 2 series carrier broke. I don't know why it would be louder than anything else. Mine was quiet as any stock rear end.

im not sure exactly why either..
but i bought a rear, and it had a 2 series posi a spacer, and a 3searies ring gear... it was loud, and i broke it..

on taking it apart, thats when we realized it had the spacer.
i had my rearend guy set it up, with new gears (and hes not a noob at this) and it still made some noise....

later after i blewup that rear (this isnt unusual for me....dragstrip launches with slicks and a manual... ive gone thru several 10bolts)
a good friend of mine set it up... it was setup perfect, but it still made some gear noise.....

asking around, i was told several times it would make noise no matter what, because the gear isnt as "solidly mounted"... i was told the gears will always make noise....
and i kinda believe it.

Hmm, never heard of it before.

I'm kinda getting to where the 10 bolt is marginal, what kind of times and 60' times were you getting to when it started grenading them?

started?
16.00... LOL.
if you make the car dead hook, and you're overly abusive with the clutch (i know i am) you can make them die with stock motors... i have exploded a 4.11 rear with a TBI 305....

but realisiticly, if you have an auto and you're being kind to it, it'll live a reasonable life pulling 1.7s.... a shorter life on mid1.6s and from low 1.6s down to 1.5s onward, you're living on borrowed time....

now silent but violent holds the 2nd place record for fastest stock internal LS1, and he has had several 1.2 60s on his rear, but hes the ONLY one ANYONE has heard of doing that.. and he has blown it up... he now has a spool(heh try finding a spool for a 10bolt.. not minispool, but full spool.), upgraded axles and ringgear..

keep in mind, alot is left to teh driver....if you were to graph stressloads on a launch.. i could let out the clutch one way, and have it spike to the moon... let it out slightly diffrent, and it wouldnt even go a quarter as high..... but if you HAVE to be nice to it, what fun is that?!

You're actually MUCH better off buying a 3 series ring and pinion set that's made to fit a 2 series carrier. All they do is machine the ring gear thicker to take up the additional space. Just about every aftermarket gear manufacturer offers these nowadays. You don't lose any strength this way, and the ring gear is mounted solid to the carrier flange still. If this option doesn't appeal to you, just locate a 3 series carrier instead and call it a day.

The biggest problem with that is if your using a stock posi and it fianally dies, then your stuck looking for a 2 series carrier or buying new gears. I don't think the ring gear spacer is a problem at all. Like I said before I ran it for a year until the stock posi crapped out and then was able to put the same ring gear on to a 3 series carier.
