VSS and speedo issues

Did a tranny swap and the VSS are different. The car had a trans with a 40 pulse per driveshaft revolution speed sensor and the swapped trans has a gear driven speed sensor with a 40 tooth driven gear (black) mated to a 15 tooth drive gear (gray) on the output shaft. The 40 pulse sensor will not work with the car's wiring/computer. The output shaft has some type of hollow metal cylinder on it that I don't know how to remove (is this the pickup for the pulse sensor?). I thought I would just swap the 40/15 tooth gears onto the output shaft and change the pigtail connector to make things work but I don't know how to remove the "pickup" from the output shaft. I will try to attach some pics of the parts I mention above so you have a visual of what I am describing. I don't have a pic of the output shaft with the "pickup" on it but will try to get one soon and post again.
The speedo was pinned at 140 when I was going about 10mph with the 40 pulse set up attached to the trans.
Anyone else have this problem and know the solution? I hope I've described things well enough for you to understand my situation.

I don't know what tranny's your specifically talking about, but look up painless wiring they have vss sensor's. GM manuals rate the sensors at 2000 or 4000 pulses per mile, painless makes one for both, 60116 is a part# for one of them I don't know the other part num. but I know its only 1 num. difference, probably 60115 maybe or something like that. As for a stock GM sensor I don't have any idea, I tried to pull off one of the metal cases once and couldn't without breaking the sensor itself. Good lyck to ya!

Thanks tpi355, I have the speed sensors but the two don't appear to be interchangable.
Trans is a 700R4. Trans works fine but I have to disconnect the speedo or the odometer and speedometer spin out of control.

Here is what my output shaft looks like. Is it possible to remove the cover type thing (i don't know what it's called) and the reluctor ring from the shaft?
Any idea where this trans may have come from, I don't think it was the original for an 87 GTA?

FWIW: My current transmission (which is now dead) has the same problem. 5 MPH actually reads over 140MPH and a quick 1 mile trip down the road added a good 100+ miles to my odometer.

i'm not sure that sleeve on the output shaft has anything to do with your vss, my 700r4 has no place to put one on the tailshaft it would run from the speedo output, and most people I've talked to about it, say that the speedo sends a signal to the ecm through the yellow speed buffer on the back of the guage cluster, you may be sending two signals from different places and have things confused. I have a similar problem, my 86 has a cable driven speedo w/ a speed buffer on the guage cluster, but I converted an 88 throttle body harness to run tuned port-speed density and it has wiring at the tranny for a vss, and I don't know which to use I need to trace wiring. If I were you I would check to make sure you don't have both the speed buffer and a vss hooked up at the same time. I don't know if this is your problem or not, but just a thought for you to look into

You may want to check out Stealth Conversions chapter 12- https://shell7.tdl.com/~jags/V8-chap...ed-Sensors.pdf -for some details on how to make the conversion needed to handle your problem. My problem is a little different and I just want to find the best (cost effective) way to put the gears back in the speedo that appear in my first set of pictures in the original post. Is it possible to remove the entire output shaft with the trans in the car? I could then just switch the output shafts and put the gears in and hook up the wires to make it work. I think this will work but I don't know and I am going to continue to searching and asking people who are wiser than me until I find a solution.

Hey that is a lot of help to me THANX! As for your problem I think I see what your trying to do I was off in space sorry. I do know that the output shaft will not come out the back end of the tranny, if you need to remove it, it will only go out the front side, which means almost complete teardown, thats about all I know about that. THANX FOR THE INFO! That sleeve looks bigger than the hole it needs to go through at the end of the tranny, it dosen't seem to have a rollpin in it, is there an internal snap ring holding it on there?

You might be right tpi355 about an internal snap ring holding it in there, I just can't get a good enough view into there to see if that's the case plus I know I don't have a tool to release a snap ring set back about 3+ inches. That cover thing needs to come off the output shaft somehow, now I just need to find out how.
Anyone know how to get the cover thing off and what it does? Eariler I called it a "pick up" for the speed sensor which wouldn't be need for a gear driven vss that I need to work with my ECM and original set up.
Can anyone help or know where I could find out?
Thanks

OK...first that metal thing is just an oil stopper, pull it off.
Next you will need a puller to remove that metal reluctor (the thing with all the teeth).
Next, just slide your plastic gear on and reuse the clip that holds it.(the shaft will have a hole). Put the oil stopper back on, replace the tailhousing and install your VSS.

Thanks Dyno Don, the people on this board are great a great help.
An oil stopper, never would have guessed that one. When did GM start using these in the 700R4? The trans was not from the original car and I don't know what year or vehicle it came from. I have tried to just pull it off but I have a tendency to break things when I add a little force. That's when I decided to seek the advise of other on this board.
Should I use a strap wrench or something else to free it and get it started or some other tools.
What kind of a puller will work to remove the reluctor? It's about 6-8 inches from the end of the output shaft.
Thanks for the info, I was starting to think no one else ever saw this situation before.

Glad to see u got yur problem answered, I even learned something, the vin number on your tranny should be on the passenger side tranny pan mounting flange, near the back usually! that should be able to tell u what it came out of, for future reference
