Botched shifter install

the guy who sold my car to me took the megashifter that was in it out, and replaced it with what looks like a firebird shifter. basically he did a real hack job of putting the shifter back in, and now its real tough to get it to shift into park, and it would never shift from first to 2nd manually like it should. so i guess i have to take the shifter out and adjust my TV cable, but i dont know how exactly to adjust the TV cable-could someone give me a walkthrough. also could any permanent trans damage have been done by not having the shifter properly installed for awhile?

The TV cable doesn't have anything to do with the shifter.

As was said the TV cable controls shift points but has nothing to do with how the shifter works. They may have installed a different shifter that doesnt line up right or maybe bolted the cable bracket in the wrong holes on the tranny.
