Rearend Question
I have a 91 camaro RS 305 with stock rearend. I want to find some 3.73 gears for it. I've been looking on ebay for 3.73 gears. Theres quite a few to pick from, but whats got me confused is the number of splines. What am I looking for that will fit in perfect?

Are you saying that you want to convert it from a single track to a limited slip? Or, are you just asking about swapping the pinion & gear?

Yes, 7.5 ten bolt.
Keep in mind that changing rear end gears may affect the speedo and the trans shift pattern.

It will throw your speedo off big time...Mine is about 10 MPH of, and I went from 2.73 to 3.23......3.73 may be alot of gear, if you dont have a bit of a motor...I wish I would have went 3.42, instead of 3.23....3.73 woulda been to much for my motor tho.....BUT SOMEDAY..Good luck, Tom

I think if you have a 3.23 gears or above its a 3 series and if lower than that it a 2 series? correct me if I'm wrong.

Factory you car would have came with 28 spline axles and a series 2 carrier. You'd either need series 2 gears or a series 3 carrier with series 3 gears. Typically factory carriers are series 2 with 3.08 and numerically lower gears. Series 3 usually are 3.23 and higher. I'd try and get a limited slip carrier along with those 3.42 gears.

Apeiron, you are right about that...........
----------
It might be easier to do the whole rear, I just got a 3.23 posi, with disc brakes for 300....Cleaned it up, painted it...Chjecked it out, changed the lube, and am burning both wheels now...Me, and my buddy did it in 8 hours....No fancy tools or workspace, and we are both almost 50......I spent probably 25, or 30 on parts to get it in, plus all the "goody" stuff, I thru in.I didnt want to jack with setting up a gear, and all the other stuff.....Tom

Just an update. I found a set of 3.42 gears and eaton locker for cheap. They are being shipped to me right now. Am I gonna need anything besides diffrential oil when putting it all back together?
If it's an Eaton Gov-Loc unit, I'd avoid it. They're nicknamed "Grenade Lock" since they're weak and have a tendecy to actually explode into pieces when they lock up on dry pavement under power. You really ought to consider an Eaton clutch style posi, or at the least, a factory Auburn posi unit. The Eaton clutch posi is pretty expensive, but you can usually locate a factory Auburn one in decent used condition for cheap. Firechicken has a 3 series one for sale right now on the engine/drivetrain section of the classifieds. Joined: Aug 1999

you'll need to right tools, depth gage or pinion setting tool, dial type in/lb torque wrench, ft/lb torque wrench, indicator and mag base, bearing splitter, press, 0-1 mic or caliper, "special tool to hold the yoke or you can hack it up with a pipe wrench, and a manual showing you what to do. you also need the specs for the gear set if they aren't etched on the gears try a .035 shim on the pinion and .008 to .012 back lash. set the pinion preload to 25-30 in/lbs with new bearings.

3.42's and eaton locker installed. Working perfect. I also put on new brakes and seals. Drove it around the block few times to break the new bearings in then went out for a test. I took off from about 10mph roll had the tires chirping when shifting. Then floored it from dead stop left 2 big posi black marks, i'll take pictures tomorrow and post um.

Nah, after the tires were spinning I was off the brake instantly. Once I hit 3rd gear I ran out of motor.

I need to get new sway bar bushings, the sway bar is just hanging. I was gonna fix it when I had the car on jacks but I forgot to buy them and I just wanted to get it done.
My speedo is off by 10mph exactly. Followed the rents they were doing 55mph and my speedo was reading 65mph. I need to follow them at lower speeds, I swear to god when it says i'm doing 40mph, which means I should actually be doing 30mph it sure doesn't feel like it. It can't be 10mph off, maybe at speeds above 50 but not lower than that. Weird

That's exactly how the speedo behaves when it's off. Mine gets thrown off during the winter months because I run 70 series snow tires. It's pretty close to accurate at lower speeds, but the faster you go, the more it's off. It's an exponential effect. Do you still have the stock 305 TBI in your car? If so, that's quite impressive to be able to grab rubber all the way through 3rd gear. In fact, it's kinda hard to believe actually.

I got the 305 out of a iroc-z. Just needed top end rebuild, put stock parts back in. So far I've added optima red top, under drive pulley, moroso 8mm blue max wires, and bigger rocker arms. I've got an open air element and k&n filter on the way.
BTW, it was a blacktop road.

Just don't look too closely
. It needs a paint job bad, the people who owned it before me lived on a farm and gravel road, you can tell its been repainted. Whoever repainted it did a cruddy job. I got all the equipment to paint mine myself, just don't have the money to buy all the paint. And theres still parts I want to get, like fiberglass hood with 2" or 4" cowl, z28 spoiler, probably new ground effects. Thread
