car is hard to stop?

I just bought an 89 formula and whenever the car is in drive it wants to take off unless you literaly stand on the brakes. I've driven other automatics before but I've never seen one that pulls as hard as mine does wothout even touching the accelerator. I can let off the gas when driving and the car will pretty much maintain the speed I thought maybe its a converter problem or something? Any help is greatly appreciated.

What does the tachometer read with the engine running in Park?

too fast

slow it down to around 700 or 750 in park/neutral

if the pedal is very hard and you have to standon it with both feet to stop it then the booster is junk

good luck

the pedal isn't hard, it just requires alot of force to stop the car. If I set the idle to 700 in park that would put it at 400 when in drive, wouldn't that be too low?

EDIT: just checked it's actually 650-700 when in drive & 1100 when in park

My car has always done that too, I suspect the converter was made tight this way for fuel economy in city driving or something. I just had to learn to live with it, hasn't caused any problems otherwise. Chirps the tires going into second gear with just a little throttle too.
