91 z vss & trans questions
The trans in my 91 z has a completely magnetic vss with the reluctor wheel directly behind it, which causes my speedo to just slam over and max out at about 5-10 mph. I bought the car this way and do not know the original trans setup. By doing a search on the vss part number it shows that the only z-28 it works with is the 94-95 lt years. Now does my original setup have the plastic gears on the tailshaft and vss shaft or is it this completely magnetic setup? How do I go about fixing this problem so my speedo reads accurate? Almost all the info I have here is from searching this board and im still not quite sure on what to do here. If I do have to swap out that reluctor wheel, how does it come off? It looks to be pressed on. Or is there a different vss that I need to find? Thanks in advance, Randy
P.S. the car is a 91 z 5.0 f code

Re: 91 z vss & trans questions
yes, you are supposed to have plastic gears that drive your vss. the electric pickup is from the 4l60e models. the reluctor does press off. not easy to do with hte output shaft still in the tranny but you might be able to do it with a puller. then you have to make sure the shaft has the holes for the plastic gear retainer. if it has the holes, it is a direct swapout

Is there a way to tell if it has the holes without a dissasembly of the tailhousing? What kind of puller would you use?

You might be able to pull out the VSS and look in to the shaft and see if you can see the holes in the shaft, almost under the reluctor gear, as you rotate the shaft. I had to do the same swap for my trans also this winter and I just pulled the tailshaft off. If you do have the holes in the shaft you will need to remove the tailshaft anyway to pull the gear. I had to use an 8" gear puller to get the reluctor gear off the shaft, another tool purchase from Harbor Freight, then you will need to find the correct drive and driven gear for your set up, a new or used vss, a retaining clip to hold the drive gear in place, and the correct wire pigtail for the new VSS. I had all the parts because I made did the swap. You may want to check out this link for parts. http://www.eatmyshifts.com/pl_700r4.htm
