TH400 trans question

I just had a fresh th400 droped off and I cant figure out where this ring goes. I need to get this trans in today. Can someone let me know?

If it is aluminum, it looks like the low/reverse accumulator ring that is under the 6 bolt steel cover that holds the low/reverse band apply piston. If it is cast iron, then it is the stator or center support ring.

I dont know what that piece was but I put the trans in and when I pulled it down into gear it made a terrable noise, didnt go into gear and I shut it off right away. I am taking it back out and giving it back to the guy who built it. Let yall know what happens next.
