Re: 700r trans brake
No transmission has a trans brake from the fatory.
You can't exactly "buy one". It's not a "thing", as such; like a set of disc pads that goes in there, or the like.
What a "trans brake" is, is a modification to the hydraulic circuits that gives the driver some method to shift the trans into 2 gears at the same time, which of course locks it up solid; and then allows the driver to shift it out of one of the gears, which allows it to start turning. The purpose is to allow the car to sit still while the driver revs the engine up to the converter stall speed, but the car doesn't move; then when the "brake" (the extra gear it's shifted into) is released, the car launches. It usually involves some kind of valve body mods, and a solenoid valve to work the extra hydraulics. Not all transmissions are capable of that mod; it depends on what clutches, bands, planetaries, and so forth are in it. I'm not sure you can do it to a 700. At least, I don't believe I've ever seen one.

Re: 700r trans brake
Interesting, so if you brought the motor up to the stall speed, any higher and... the tranny would self destruct wouldn't it? Or you'd just start to stall out the motor a bit?
Yea, I think i've heard that you *can* get it done to a 700R4, but since the tranny is pretty weak it's not a good idea, and very few people have done it. At least I think that's what i've heard...

Re: 700r trans brake
The stall speed is the speed at which the torque converter transmits enough load to the engine to prevent it from reving any higher, so by definition you can't bring it higher than the stall speed with the transbrake on. The idea of the transbrake is to allow you to stall to a higher speed than you could by holding back the car with the foot brake.

The 700R4 isn't particularly good for drag racing, but if the car is going to be street driven the O/D is nice to keep.

Re: 700r trans brake
I myself have run the 700R4 , but I drive my car as a daily driver. They have learned alot over the years on beefing up the 700R4. I tore my stock 700R4 out in apprx 30000 miles. I did some engine mods to my 305 over the years. I do not know what type of horspower it puts out but it will stay up with alot of modified 350. I had my 700R4 rebuilt up here about 14 yrs ago. They knew some mods for them then but not what they know today. I got about 60000 miles out of that tranny rebuid. I do not baby my car either it is driven quit aggressively. So to make a long story short, in my winter project I have built a 383 vortec crank dynoed at 430 hrspower . I feel with what I have thrown at my 700R4 over the years I had one built by a reputable shop. The thing is , the reason why people run the 350 and 400 is the gear ratio from first to second is alot closer. That is why they run them trannies for racing. But the guys rebuilding these 700 R4 say they have cars doing all kinds of passes in the 9-10 second bracket and not breaking them. Also the overdrive is real nice for cruising with a low rear end ratio. It compensates for not having the higher rev down the highway. This is why I will stay with my 700R4 is for cruising on the highway .
