why did my 87 formula 350 come with a 9bolt?

i was under the car a week and a half ago and i always assumed that i had a 10bolt bc my car was a stock 350TPI and they only used the strongest stuff. but low and behold i counted the bolts on my rear and its a 9 bolt damn! ive heard there isnt many things out there for these rears, but eventually gona put in a 500hp 383 so im prob gona want to put in a auburn pro limited slip and moser axels.
why did my 350tpi come with a 9 bolt? which was stronger? and are there parts for my 9 bolt or
should i just look for a 10bolt?

The 9 bolt is stronger than the 10 bolt.

yea thats what i heard but the 9 bolts are hard to find parts for it. can a 9 bolt be built to live behind a 450-500hp 383? please say yessss

moser axles, some kind of good posi, and raytech instilation kits and maybe 3.42 gears.

How long it lives depends on how badly you abuse it.

Your worst problem will be trying to find a "good" posi unit for a 9 bolt. As far as I know, nobody offers new replacement units, and the original ones seem to burn out really easy. There is a tech article on the site here that tells you how to shim the posi so it grabs good again. I'm also not sure if Moser or anyone else offers replacement 9 bolt axles either. If you're seriously going to be putting roughly 500 HP to the rear wheels, your only sensible choice is an aftermarket 9 inch or 12 bolt from Moser that's custom built for our cars. They run about $2K, but any 9 bolt or 10 bolt factory rear is going to be living on borrowed time behind a stout motor like the one you're suggesting. It sucks to have to pay that much for a rearend, but if you put one of those under your car, you can beat on it all you want without worrying about breaking the rear. I have a factory 12 bolt under my 69 Camaro that I've hammered on for 20 years now, and it's never broken anything. I've grenaded several Muncie 4 speeds over the years, but that 12 bolt just keeps on truckin!
