700R4 automatic shift

I got one for you guys. My friend had a, i want to say 89 or 88 iroc. The Trans was a 700r4 and he could drop it in 1st and punch it he never touch the shifter and it would shift on its own. Was that a kit or as he says came in the car that way

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

not to be an azz, but have you read anything on most of the aftermarket shift kits?
I know most of them allow you to MANUALY shift 123 and then 4th is full auto
so if thats the case then holding it in 1stgear and it still shifts on its own means that would be stock

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

I've never had an auto car that would "shift on it's own" - it's not factory if it truly does. 1st is 1st - it'll stay there til the motor blows.

How some of these new auto or manual trannies work I don't know, but that's technology way after the thirdgen line.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

If he put it in "1" and it shifted into second by itself, then the tranny is stock. A shift kit would allow you to hold the gear as long as you want.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

Most factory 700R4's, if you put them in first gear, will come out of first once the rpm becomes high enough. The TransGo Performance Shift kit will allow you to hold any gear to any rpm.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

I'm near positive mine is stock, and if I put it in 1...it stays there.

I've read that it'll shift into second, but not in my experience.

My Father has been doing this work for 30 years and he didnt know. Yes 1 Had a 79 olds cutlass supreme old 350 rocket turbo 350 with a b&M trickshift kit. My first trans job. You almost had to shift it manually. That was my question and thank you!

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

The TransGo 700-2-3 has the option of building it full manual. I have installed hundred's and sold hundred's of these and have never did a full manual transmission. I find that it has never been necessary to override the governor completely.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

Some auto tranny's will shift on there own. My iroc does it and it has a shift kit in it. Turbo 400's do it to. I've also had 700R4's that don't do it. Automatics are just plain tricky.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

If the right kit is used, you will hold the gear till you move the lever. I have never had one not do this, but there are always exceptions.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

So I don't get over charged what would I look at paying for a rebuild on my 700R4. Use will be mild street use, and a basic shift kit. The guy i Bought the car from never had the T.V cable hooked up

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

It seems most 700R4s will shift out of 1st even if the lever is in 1, but some I have driven stay there. Must be a calibration or a build factory difference. I asked on my last rebuild that i be able to hold 1st manually until I shifted, but they didnt do it and said on the '88-up 700s it wasnt possible. I have an '86 but have been through a few 700s. I now have a '88-up with aux. v.b. in it. I am having a new issue with this one and it only has 1000miles on it. Another tranny guy also told me that he didnt think it would be possible to hold 1st. But I see the Trans-Go and other kits that say the oppposite. I need to get this one rebuilt (2-4 band seems to be gone) but want it to do what I need it to this time.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

Before I rebuilt my tranny, I could hold 1st forever. I rebuilt it with a master kit, and no valve body mods, and I can still hold 1st. I have never driven a car that when manually shifted into 1st, or 2cnd for that matter, would upshift on it's own.

Does the shifter move from 1st to 2cnd? That would be wierd.

My Elcamino column shifter used to move up when accelerating. But that was becuase of broken trans and motor mounts.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

in mine, it will shift to second, but if i hold it in 2 or D and run it out of those gears i will just repeatedly smash the rev limiter

thanks for confirming the balogna comments made erlier. this must be some new feature on those 4l60e's or 4l64's. only thing that makes the trans shift is when input pressure overcomes TV pressure. but if the valve is blocked...no shift.

SPEEDRACER: rebuilding my trans was expensive because i opted for the best stuff on the market, i even got a new trans case because mine was too worn out for high performance applications. i even had my torque converter rebuilt and tuned up. i also got wholesale price on labour and parts because i know the owner of the shop...but if you dont know somebody you can prob look at around 3G's USD. now the price can obivously vary based on what parts need replacement, how good quality the parts are, and how far you want to go with your shiftkit. when you take it to the shop, if its a good place they will let you talk to the mechanic and he will chat with you about what needs replacement and whats still good. so if your mechanically inclined at all...you should be able to follow along with him so he doesnt bs you.

Re: 700R4 automatic shift

I know this guy that that builds transmissions. went and had a talk with him and said he uses transgo stage 2 shift kit. With 1800 stall converter and coulple other trick stuff. for 600 bench build. So i have to ask my dad about this cat and see what he says. My dad has been turning wrenches in this town for 30 yrs. So he can get me the hookup. I wish dad would build it with me. Never has time though. Yeah I do his sidework now.

All the third gens I've driven held 1st. I am yet to find one that doesn't. I am not sure why people are expreincing 1-2shift in first gear.
