It's the speedometer gear. You should be able to find a ton of info on here. Someone else should chime in though, as I have no experience changing one of these.

Pretty simple actually. The driver and driven gears will probably need changed. The driver is on the tailshaft, just remove the tail shaft housing, a bit of fluid will leak out, no major parts to fool with. The gear just slides on and off, a clip holds it on. The driven gear is in the plug that goes in the side of the tailshaft, easy swap.

The speedo gears can be acquired from www.700r4.com - they have a conversion calculator online to help you choose the right gears.

you have to change the gear on the inside you cant just change the outter gear so i dont have to take the tranny apart a bit not the kinda thing i want to do. unless i really have to. how is the one in the side? i dont get how you would take that one out.

it slides out with the retainer deal that the cable threads onto, or that the VSS connects to, whichever you have
a little bolt holds it in place
cant miss it

Oops. Is this a gear drive speedometer or an electric? Whole different deal without the cable. Some cars have a conversion module on the side of the ECM that drives the speedometer that would have to be changed.

It's really not that big of a deal to change - you don't take the tranny apart, just remove the tailhousing - there are 4 bolts that hold it on. You'll need to remove the driveshaft (take 4 bolts out of pinion, and pull it out of tranny), then take 4 bolts out of tailhousing and remove it, and there's the gear, depress clip, slide it off, replace with new, and replace tailhousing and drive shaft. Then change the gear in the speedo housing and done.
