Re: spline question
no, 84-1/2 was the spline change for the input
27 to 30
all 85 and up are 30
ppl should really research before posting info
82-84 were oddballs, the early POS ones, the worst ever
then 85-86 were a little better but still crap
then 87-up are good to go
good luck

Re: spline question
In addition the V6 version has fewer clutch plates and some other differences from the V8 version. If you decide to have the one in your T/A rebuilt all the later upgrades/mods can be done to it(this is how the 700 in my '83 Z was rebuilt).

Re: spline question
And make sure that your V6 version means 4.3 V6; all other V6 700R4s don't fit V8s
don't forget to keep your tailshaft housing to bolt your torque arm back on!!

Re: spline question
bringing this up from the dead...
can you swap a 30 spline input shaft into a 700r4 that originally has 27 splines?

Re: spline question
You can, if "swap" can include the meaning "completely disassemble every part of the transmission and rebuild it resulting in more work than it would have been to find a different transmission".

Re: spline question
It's not quite as bad as you think;
With the transmission out, you must pull the pan off and take out the TCC. It's the torque converter lockup device and it goes inside the front pump assembly from the bottom. If you don't take this out then you can't get the front pump out.
Next, take all of the bolts out of the front pump and you will see two holes threaded into the pump instead of the housing. All of your bolts that you just removed go into the housing. If you use some all thread, some flat washers, and some deep well sockets you can make a home made slidehammer set and pull the front pump.
Once you have done this you can get to the input shaft. Buy the repair manual at the parts store, it's about 20 bucks or so and has pretty good detail on how to do it. I personally prefer using a 55 gallon drum to hold the tranny so that it is not laying flat. If you have the tranny sitting vertically in the drum it can keep you from messing up anything else that may be ready to fall out during the disassembly/re-assembly process.
Good luck!
