Converter lockup switch question

I read the tech article on making a switch to lockup the torque converter, and I understand that it shaves time off of a quarter mile, but I have a question, if I was to race in a quarter mile race like at a strip, and I went from a dead stop to WOT, when would I activate the switch??? like during the 1-2 shift??
any help???

Re: Converter lockup switch question

You dont want your converter to lockup when your racing only on the highway.

Re: Converter lockup switch question

The ctock converter clutch is a little weenie thing that's only designed to hold up under cruising power. For acceleration it's supposed to be unlocked. Locking it up at WOT will kill it eventually. If you had a racing converter with a multi-disc clutch, then maybe it would be ok to leave it locked up.

Re: Converter lockup switch question

On while you're cruising, yes. You could lock it up in any gear except first, but it must be locked up in fourth.

Re: Converter lockup switch question

As long as you're cruising or accelerating only lightly it's fine to be locked up.

Re: Converter lockup switch question

the converter lockup will only happen in fourth gear in OD at around 40 to 45 and is mostly for cruising. B&M makes a converter lockup kit that allows you to adjust the speed at which lockup occurs and you can also turn it on and off. as for quarter mile times I don't see that much of a difference happening ET wise.

Re: Converter lockup switch question

When my turd ran low 14's, I temporarily switched to a no CC q-jet and vac-advance dist. I had a lock-up switch for the TCC and it was worth 2 tenths in the quarter and 1-2 mph. It will not lock-up the converter in first with the switch on. I would leave the line with it on and it would be locked from 2nd gear on.

My 1987 Monte Carlo SS with a 200r4, would lockup at WOT in 4th gear...it's built into the ECM to do that.
