Do you lose OD with a stall converter?
I bought an 89 recently and it has a b and m 2800 stall in it, but the car never shifts into OD, my mechanic said the OD is in the torque converters, is this true? Is the only way to get the OD back is by getting the stock torque converter back in?

Torque converters come in 2 ways. 1 lockup style used with a overdrive tranmssion. 2 non lockup and the transmission needs to be specificly set up for that converter and it has no lockup. Try and see if you can get some #'s off of the coverter and see what converter you really have. Also if the car isnt locking up it might be a computer problem.

You do not 'loose od' with a higher stall tc whether its lockup or not.
Though with a non lockup high stall TC you will loose some milage since that was the whole reason for having lockup.

Haha, time to find a new mechanic.
Is the tranny in good shape? Fluid looks/smells ok? I'd check the little things first like making sure the shifter and TV cables have been adjusted properly, etc..

are we 10000000% sure that it still has the 700 in it and not a turbo 350. that would explain no overdrive.

i agree 100% with the above.
also make sure the tranny is not shifting to 4th.
the extra slip with the non locking coverter maybe fooling you. that would make alot more sense along the lines of what your mechanic may mean.

Re: Do you lose OD with a stall converter?
I got to do some more testing to see if its shifting to 4th or not. Yes it is the 700r4, and yes the tv cable is adjusted correctly, and the fluid is fine.

Re: Do you lose OD with a stall converter?
It IS shifting into 4th, but its not locking up. Also we can't get a reading on the computer cause the ecm is jerry rigged with two harnesses spliced together and neither reads. I think it might not be hooked up to the computer right maybe. There is also a mistery switch behind the shifter that seems non functional, it doesnt do anything as far as I can tell. My mechanic thinks that the converter doesnt have the lockup in it still. What reasons could be for it not locking up? I need to fix this im getting 12 mpg. It turns 3k at 65 mph
