I have a tapping noise that sounds sorta like a loose rocker arm but its coming from the TC/ flexplate area. It only does it under load not in nuetral or park. Is this noise something that indicates a broken flexplate? I have done a visual inspection and I cannot see any cracks. The torque converter bolts are tight. Anyone have any ideas? My experience with broken flexplates that they make a terrible sound not just a ticking sound.

Ok swapped out the flexplate and the noise is still there. Any Ideas?

Could be the converter itself.

Working on the same problem. The converter was sent back to the manufacturer and I'll know if it was that soon. I also took out the front pump from the trans. I'm going to rebuild it this week and see what happens. I'll let you know. If you find out anything please let me know also.

Some of the tranny bolts may have worked their way loose, I know that can cause a tap/knock sound. ( i know you checked you tC bolts)

Did you ever figure out what was causing the noise? I'm still waiting to get my converter back so I'm not sure what was causing my noise yet.

No I havent. My super duper Craftsman low-pro jack took a crap and I have been real busy with work. I am thinking in middle of August I will just take it up to the shop that built the trans.

This has happened to me. Turned out that when I reinstalled the auto trans, a bracket that holds the wiring loom at the back of the block dropped down between the engine and bell housing leaving a gap of about 1/8th - 3/16ths between them when tightened down. I kept hearing a "tap tap tap", thought I had a major problem. Loosened the bell housing bolts, installed the bracket correctly and no more tap tap tap.

I wish it was that easy for me. I'm half expecting it to be the converter but knowing my luck it will be a broken internal trans part. I'll keep everyone informed. I should know about the condition of the converter early this week.

Still waiting on that damn torque converter....

OK Its figured out. My original flexplate was bent from when it was bolted to the motor sitting on the floor for 5 years before I installed it. I installed it on the rebuilt motor not knowing it was bent. The guy who inspected my trans said that the converter and front pump had wear/damage and after he seen the flexplate I replaced he said noise and damage was (he was 99% sure) from the bent flexplate.
