Replacing front pump seal
Hey all,
I have a turbo 350 that is leaking from the front pump seal and thought I would ask on here what all I should do to fix the leak.
I have gathered so far that replacing the seal itself is not a big deal once I have the transmission out but I am wondering if there is something else I should attempt to replace to make sure I dont have a leak when Im done.
Specifically I have read that a large clearance between the converter snout and pump front bushing can cause a leak through the front seal because the drain hole is small. Should I also look to replace the bushing while the trans is out?
I am not sure how much extra work is involved in changing this bushing. Do I have to remove the pump?
Thanks for any help.
James.

Re: Replacing front pump seal
i assume you mean the seal for around the TC snout
usually it is simply called the front seal
is there any noticeable slop in the bushing ?
not a very common occurance at all for the bushing to be worn
the output one sure you see them be worn out sloppy pretty commonly, but usually not the input, i have never seen one worn out anyways
the TC snout being into the pump far enough can be caused by installing the flexplate backwards
good luck

Re: Replacing front pump seal
I installed the flexplate where it pushes the converter back into the transmission. If I had it the other way around the converter would be out of the transmission farther.
I assume having the TC in as far as possible is correct?
People on other boards have suggested that the front bushing on TH350's wears very quickly and that this can lead to a seal leak. See the link below.

Re: Replacing front pump seal
front pump bushings wear they just don't tend to wipe out. the front pump bushing being overly worn, especially if the tranny hasn't been rebuilt before(high miles) is a very common reason for the front seal to leak. it is better to remove the pump(and easier) to replace the bushing.

replaced the bushing and seal and no more leak! Its really amazing because the old parts didnt look that bad at all but the new ones did the trick.
