Need help ID ing axle in an 82 Z-28

How can I tell what gear ratio axle is in the car and if it has posi traction?

Is there a tag or number on the axle if it is still stock?

I think everything is stock but we were told it has posi and better gears, Id like to know for sure.

Thanks

The only way to know for absolute sure is to take the cover off and look.

Assuming it's still stock and the internals are still stock, you have 2 other options. An RPO code will tell you what's in the diff providing the RPO sheet is still readable. Also stamped on the front of the passenger side axle tube near the center section will be a code. This is normally very hard to read.

If however the rear cover hasn't been off in 25 years, It's a good time to change the diff oil and while the cover is off, have a look inside to see what's in it.

Here's how to determinne what ratio the rear is (numbers are stamped on the ring and pinion):

41 : 15 = 2.73
40 : 13 = 3.08
42 : 13 = 3.23
41 : 12 = 3.42
41 : 11 = 3.73

Re: Need help ID ing axle in an 82 Z-28

Looking at the diff case from the rear, there will be a tag on the right side, which I think says "limited slip". On my car it is mounted about the 4 o'clock positon under one of the bolts. It ia maybe 1/2 inch wide by about 1-1/2 inches long. On the gear ratios, it is probably best to remove the conver an count. I have not been able to find the code on the axle, due to the rust cover.

If you have rear drum brakes, there are 5 possible ratios, 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, 3.23, and 3.42. If you have rear disk brakes there are only 4 ratios available, 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, and 3.23.

JamesC is missing 41 : 14 2.93 in his list and 41 : 11 3.73 was not available in 1982.

Interesting. I've never heard of the 2:93 (hey, I don't get out much). What years might have had that gear set?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Need help ID ing axle in an 82 Z-28

AFAIK that was a CFI combo only, so it would have been available only in 82 & maybe 83.... 41 & 14

Re: Need help ID ing axle in an 82 Z-28

here is a list of several calculators. there is one in here that will take your rpm, speed, and tire height and give you the gear ratio. you have to use the 1:1 gear in the trans to figure off of. third for auto, fourth for manual----but you already know that dont ya

Look at the Tech Data on the home page for 82 and 83 Camaros. 2.93 was standard for all auto trannies in 82 and only the LU5 (CFI) engine in 83. Note that that was the 200C 3 speed auto trans.

Speaking of getting out and about.....you have any plans to visit the SuperChevy show in KC (Aug 17-19) or the Camaro Club of KC Midwest Camaro Fest Aug 25th?????

Oddly enough, a few days ago I found the Camaro Club of KC in an on-line search. My wife and I have just purchased a home in Lawrence, though we won't move until May of next year, and I thought the club would be a good way of meeting people. More odd still is that Lee's 85 IROC looks to be a carbon copy of my 85--silver and all. I've never seen another of that color up close and personal. Check "car details" below for a pic. So, in answer to your question, attending the Fest is a possibility.
