Re: what trans fluid

The owner's manual for your '84 would call for Dexron ll but that's been superseded by Dexron lll(there's a lV,V and Vl I believe but read the label as to what is compatible).

Grasp bottle. Remove top. Locate bottle above fill tube, using funnel if necessary. Invert bottle.

Dexron ANYTHING is compatible, they just keep updating the spec. The newer fluids work in the older transmissions just fine.

Re: what trans fluid

all things said if you don't know if/when the trans fluid and filter has been changed, you probably should change it, not just add more.

- and again - sofa you've got a major grasp of the obvious. Everytime I turn around I'm laughing my but off at something you're saying....

Actually, I saw sofa in Vegas last year--he was packing them in at the Bellagio. Later, he was signing autographs at CarQuest .

Re: what trans fluid

Black, a 700R4 takes about ten quarts of transmission fluid to fill up the tranny and the torque converter. If your seeing fluid on the tip of the stick, you still have around eight or so quarts in the transmission & converter, most likely. Your probably only a quart or quart and a half low. If the transmission fluid and filter hasn't been changed, this is a good time to do it. The Dextron II or III should be fine as other have said.

Don't wait until the transmission starts to slip or the fluid gets that scorched scent to change the fluid. I switched my 700R4 over to Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF at 165,000 miles. That was the very first change my 700R4, ever got.

Currently, the car has 286,000 miles on it. Same transmission, no rebuild etc. I have tranny fluid changed about every 25,000 miles. I think a big part of why my 700R4 has lived for 286,000 miles is the frequent fluid changes, it got after 165,000 miles. I think the ole 700R4 will make to 300,000 miles...

Re: what trans fluid

To check the fluid on most automatic transmissions,700R4 included,it's best to check with the fluid warm(10 minute or so drive)with the trans in park with the motor running.
