T5 Problem

I'm grinding when I got in reverse with my T5. It doesn't do it in any other gear. It's not very loud but I get a definite vibration in the shifter handle. The only thing I've done to the car recently it replaced the master/slave although it was working properly after this repair.

Re: T5 Problem

are you grinding when you are in gear?? or grinding when you are puting it in gear??

my trans grinds sometimes.. i just put it into first, to stop the gears, then throw it in reverse..

Re: T5 Problem

Hmmm... how big a problem is that? will I eventually lose reverse or will it continue to be a minor nuisance? How difficult is it to replace?

Re: T5 Problem

eventually you will lose reverse. how hard is it? it depends on your mechanical skills. it involves removing the tranny and taking the tail housing out , and replacing the sycro. it should not take more the than 1 hour (if you have the tranny off the car).

Re: T5 Problem

The T-5 DOESN'T HAVE a reverse synchro.

For that matter, NO manual transmission introduced before about 1990 did. None of the old 3-speeds or 4-speeds for example. The first trans I know of that has that, is the T-56.

If all that's happening is that you're grinding the hell out of it when you put it into reverse, stop doing that; and do it the way everybody has been putting transmissions into gear since ..... well, since transmissions were invented.

Put it into a forward gear - in the case of the T-5, ANY forward gear will do - before putting it into reverse. That will stop everything from spinning in there, and you won't destroy reverse gear and fill the fluid up with metal chips, like you're doing by just jamming it into gear and listening to it grind.

Re: T5 Problem

Ok... I'm a total noob with manual transmissions so I need this broken into baby language. Before going to reverse I should put the trans in 1st. Do I need to let off the clutch and actually move the car or is it enough to just move the shifter?

Re: T5 Problem

No, you don't have to move the car; just put the trans into any forward gear (since in the T-5 they're all synchronized and won't grind, unlike reverse) to stop the guts from spinning, THEN put it into reverse. When you do it that way, the gears won't be spinning inside there when you try to shift into the unsybchronized gear, so they won't grind.
