shifting

i just got ny th400 put in my car and when ever i try and shift it myself when i put it in first i get to like 5000 rpm and it shifts by itself i thought it was the shift cable not back far enough but thats not it can there be anything else that would make it shift by itself does the vacuum hose have anything to do with it. i have it hooked up just woundering what it does thanks.

A stock transmission will shift at redline, regardless of the position of the manual shaft.

even if i put it in first i had no problem with this with my other trans my shift point is going to be around 6200.

Even if you put it in first. Play with the governor to raise you shift point, or put a TransGo shift kit in to eliminate that behavior.

can i just remove the govoner does it do anything other than set the shift point this is a race car only and am not driving on the street.

if it is a race only car, then switch to a manual valvebody. Otherwise, recalibrate the governor to shift at the rpm you need.

how do you recalibrate it using smaller springs. i probbly will get the valve body later on but just want to understand alittle more.
