ok well im looking in getting a new engine for my car but i want a tranny that isnt going to break. i got a stock 5 speed transmisson on a 1990 Camaro RS. engine is a 305. what is a really good tranny that will hold up to 500 tq?
i found this website
http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/tr-3550.html
and im wondering if anyone you guys know or used any of these type of transmissons. if not what is a good one to get.
im looking for a 5 speed by the way.

Re: Tranny Swap
those are both good transmissions
tremec tko 500 and 600
another popular swap is the T56 6 speed from a fourth gen camaro.
the tko series would be better for your 500tq application tho

Re: Tranny Swap
T56 can be done for around 1300, more or less
tremecs are quality, so I believe the price is fair for what you're getting.
the T56 will require more parts from the T5 removed and replaced with the T56 stuff than the tremecs will.
I know the T56 also requires modifying the shifter hole in the console as it sits in a different location than the T5. I think I've also read the same for the tremecs.
both are reasonable though, as far as fitting the car goes, and will work with minor modifications. nothing crazy really.

Re: Tranny Swap
yeah they said it will fit the shifter hole but will sit slightly forward so 1st 3rd and 5th gear will hit the ash tray. so just some minor adjustments should be ok.
anyways thanks for the info guys
ill probably be getting a Tremecs. been reading alittle more about them and stuff liek that. seems to be pretty good tranny.
is the T5 tranny pure crap?
thats what i been hearing anyways.

Re: Tranny Swap
some people have broken numerous T5's and hate them.
I have had the same T5 for 2 years and whomp on it all day with my 305 tpi engine. it has never given me any problems aside from a leak but that was because the drain plug was loose.
id say it'd survive even a stock 350
but if you're going with a 500ft/lbs engine id ditch the stock T5

Re: Tranny Swap
yeah im doing a good job with my 305 tpi engine on it as well. well used to anyways.
i gotta get it inspected. break lines blew up while break. well they were really rusted out as i bought it used. didnt bother checking the lines. so i crashed into a ditch.
got high centerd on the sidewalk. then 5 mins later. i see a cop driving down the road. then pulls over to check it out. talk about bad timing.
havnt drive in in like 3 months.
so im just looking at a winter project to do.
ill probably get the Tremec one.
if i see something cheaper that will hold the power i want. ill probably get that. so if any of you guys know a strong cheaper tranny. let me know.

Re: Tranny Swap
No, in spite of what some would have you believe. No, they aren't performance oriented, but under normal driving conditions many have lasted 20 years or more, even the non-WC types. I've run the latter for a couple of years behind a 350/330 without difficulties--but I don't drive hard either.
