Richmond Mini Spool?

I was kinda wondering how a mini spool would hold up in everyday driving on a stock 9 bolt.......its geared 3:73 but is open......would it work for a driver? or would it break my axles when i took a hard turn?

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

Do they even make a mini spool for a 9 bolt? I was under the impression that there was a 26 spline mini spool for the 7.5" 10 bolt and maybe a 28 spline one but I've never seen one for a 9 bolt. Are you confusing it with a 9"?

A mini spool is designed for dirt track racing. It's hard on tires and axles on pavement and you shouldn't be driving on the street with locked axles anyway.

The 700R4 driveshaft works with a long tailshaft TH350. The short tailshaft TH350 needs the longer driveshaft from a 82-83 third gen that came with the metric 3 speed (TH200C).

instead of hunting down one of those rare drive shafts like u were talkin about....would'nt it be easier just to change my tail shaft?

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

you would need to disassemble the trans to install a longer output shaft as well. just go to a junkyard and pull a th350 from a 73-87 longbed chevy pickup they all came with the 9" tail housing.

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

As mentioned above. The tailshaft goes from the inside out and it's at the back of the tranny. The entire tranny will need to be disassembled to simply "change the tailshaft". It will be easier to just find a long tailshaft TH350 or the longer driveshaft.

Just get a new driveshaft made to the proper length.

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

Get a real posi. You are putting an unbelievable amount of stress on stock axles driving w/ a spool on the street. Plus it's downright dangerous, not having your rear tires differentiating. If you can't get a posi keep it open. But you can get an auburn used on ebay for $100 so there really is no excuse.

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

Then you have a Borg Warner 9 bolt. The only thing it has in common with the 10 bolt is external mounts. Wanting to use 10 bolt internal parts, you might as well try to install Ford 7.5" parts in it. You'll get the same results. They're 2 completely different diffs.

Parts for a 9 bolt are very hard to find if you can find anything. Your best source for 9 bolt parts is Australia. If you want to upgrade the diff, you're better off yanking out the 9 bolt and installing a 10 bolt. It's not much of an upgrade but there's a much better supply of parts.

There's always a complete diff swap to something aftermarket. A direct bolt in 12 bolt or Ford 9" is always a better option.

I also highly doubt your 9 bolt is 3.73 gear. Factory gear ratios were 2.77, 3.27, 3.45 and there was an over the counter ratio of 3.70 once.

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

www.spohn.net is one of the TGO sponsors and has good deals. Click on any of the banners you see on TGO for links to third gen parts.

There's a couple of manufactures who make a bolt in 9" for a third gen. The cheapest way is to buy the housing package. You get the housing and axles for about $1000. You then install your own brakes and center section.

A complete, ready to bolt in diff is around $2500.

Re: Richmond Mini Spool?

4th gen diff is a direct bolt in but it isn't much of an upgrade. It's still the same tiny 7-5/8" ring gear but will have slightly larger 28 spline axles. The only problem using one is that it's about 2" wider on each side so proper backspaced rims are required to tuck the wheels back under the fenders. There will probably also be a problem with park brake cables.
