3.08 Posi?

Was there such a thing and did it ever come on a GTA?

Here's the deal. I found this rear end for sale with disks that is coming off an '89 GTA with 78K miles. The guy *thinks* it is a 3.08 and says it is a 10 bolt.

Hour and a half drive to check it out tomorrow... I want to be prepared.

Thanks for the help!

Re: 3.08 Posi?

Well, I picked it up today. Couldn't pass it up.

It's actually a nine bolt that is clearly stamped "Borg-Warner" and has a metal tag on it saying it requires special lubricant for "anti-slip".

That makes it a 3.23 if it came off an '89 GTA, right?

I'm assuming so unless one of you knows different.

Re: 3.08 Posi?

'89 GTA with a 350 and dual cats would have a 3.27 9-bolt rear end.

Re: 3.08 Posi?

3.23 would be a ten bolt ratio. 3.27 is a nine bolt posi. Very good rearend. I had one in my basement ready to install in my former IROC but then my mom totaled it. Oh well.

Re: 3.08 Posi?

Yep... 3.27. I got my gears confused. I'm actually more pleased than if it were a 3.08.

Anybody ever do a drum to disk e-brake conversion?

Re: 3.08 Posi?

What makes the 3.23 10 bolt less desireable? In a relatively stock car is the 10 bolt disc rear a good choice? Thanks!

Re: 3.08 Posi?

In a relatively stock car a 10 bolt will be just fine. The 9 bolt is a lot stronger of a rear end though. If you were to compare the two side by side you would notice how much more massive the 9 bolt is. It can handle more power. But at the same time i have a 3.42 ten bolt in a very modified IROC and so far it seems to be fine. If i blow it though im going to start hunting around for a 3.45 9 bolt.

Re: 3.08 Posi?

I was looking for a 3.42 disk rear but was more than happy to settle for this Corporate rear with 3.27. The only problem I have heard about with respect to this axle is that parts for it can be hard to find sometimes. At this point I am sure all the seal are fine and the wear on it looks a lot less than what I have on the car now.

Looking for a speedo gear and e-brake cable. Once I find those and touch up the piece a little, I'll get it installed.

Cadillac,
If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for the 9 bolt rear? What do they usually sell for? How much is a 10 bolt sell for? The rear that I am trying to establish a value for is a 10 bolt all rebuilt with discs. Thanks!

JP

Re: 3.08 Posi?

I got the 9 bolt with disks and panhard bar for $250. Seller claimed it came off a GTA with 78K miles.

Like I said... couldn't pass it up.

Re: 3.08 Posi?

I found a 88 rear disc break posi, and he says its a 3.08. Now reading through this will it fit on 1991 camaro? And would it more likely be a 9 bolt or a ten bolt?
