700R4 vs 4L60
Ok, so I have a 91 Z28 with (according to the RPO codes) a 700R4. I have been told its a 4L60. First, what is the difference? Secondly, what is the difference between those two and a 4L60E? Will the internals from a 4L60E work in a 4L60 or 700R4?

Re: 700R4 vs 4L60
The 700R4 and 4L60 are essentially the same unit, just with a different naming scheme. A 4L60E is different, with an electronically controlled valve body, but the same or similar hard parts.

Re: 700R4 vs 4L60
X2. There are some parts that are being used in the 700R4/4L60 trannys that have been updated in the 4L60E and 4L65Es. But the case is different for those. Ive seen SunShells and Release Spring assemblys being used in older trannys from the newest E models. I am no expert, but I have been learning about them and am in process of doing my 1st rebuild on a 91 700R4/4L60. My car is an 86 but has long been gone from the orig trans.

Re: 700R4 vs 4L60
Its called a 700R4 from 83 to 89. In 90, GM decided to call it a 4L60. That means 4 forward gears, Longitudally mounted (rear wheel drive), and a strength rating of 60. That 60 number doesnt mean anything special, its just a number.

Re: 700R4 vs 4L60
So, theoretically ... if something were wrong with the tranny in my 91 Z, like the clutch plates, I could pull them out of a 4L60E from a 94 Chevy Half ton van, and use those internals in mine?

Well, roughly, how much are you talkin about for a rebuild for just a standard cruisin car.

Interchangability is pretty much the same. But there are some parts that are accomidating to others ones. Like a Low-Reverse Piston and the Support. There were a few different ones and they are matched. Some more stuff too. But relatively there is alot of similar parts in the trannys.
