700r4 swap

I'm swapping the 700R4 in my '89 Trans Am with a 700R4 out of an '86 IROC. The new trans has a cable speedo, while my old trans has an electronic speedo.

Any ideas for changing the two? Can I unbolt the tail housing on each tranny and swap those? Any ideas appreciated.

Re: 700r4 swap

I think youre taking a step back. Not even concerning the cable setup either. The 700R4 had changes in '87 that improved them. Reverting back to a outdated early 87 and prior is not the right direction. 89-up had evem more improvements and as always, its best to fing the latest availble. A 91-93 model would be what I would seek. I have a 86 TA which originally had an Electronic speedo. Your 86 700R4 must be an early model or from a truck. I can get you a pic of the Elect Sender that I still have (amazingly still functions) if needed.

Re: 700r4 swap

Nevermind guys. Swap went easier than I expected. I removed the tail housing bolts and it just slipped right off. Luckily for me, I found that the speedo drive gear's retaining clip had somehow fallen off or maybe wasn't properly installed.

I'm not worried about the 89 to 86 swap either, as the 89 was fried (tranny drop @ 6000 rounds - don't ask lol) and the 86 was recently rebuilt about 10,000 ago and had a shift kit installed. Thanks for the input though.
