I have the opportunity to purchase a 92 trans am for $200 bucks, it runs ok an looks decent except for the pass side fender which needs to be replaced.. the problem is the trans is shot.. its a 700r4.. now I already have a spare rebuilt 700r4 sitting around but its for a corvette (origionally from my 86 c4 to be exact).. what would I have to do to be able to put it in the TA? Is it as simple as swapping the tailshafts? If so how hard of an undertaking is it? I've had trannys apart before but never a 700.. any insite would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

I think the Corvette 700R4's output shaft is slightly longer than the
F-Body 700. I remember reading that somewhere else in this forum.
If it's the same length, then swap the tailshafts and swap trannies.
If it's an LB9 T/A, than I'd swap the Corvette governor out also.
If it's an L98 T/A, the governors should be the same I believe.

Actually the Output Shaft is Shorter on the Vette by a few inches. You will need both a Std output shaft and the f-body tailhousing.

Thanks for the correction Mikz86TA, I thought the C4 700R4's had longer tailshaft.
Now does the Vette housing have the necessary mounts for your torque arm? If not, then you will have to go aftermarket on the transmission crossmember. One with a torque arm mount built in...such as Spohn.

X2. IMO it would be wise to swap the Governors too.
I assumed the torque arm mount was part of the tailshaft.. I guess I'd really need them side by side to figure out what I'm dealing with.. either way I'll probably pick the TA up for $200 since I know I could part it out and come out ahead, hell I could probably sell the complete TPI setup for $250 or so..

The tailhousing is the torque arm mount..sort of. You have a special casting tailhousing on the F-body with 3 thru bolts. Which attach to the actual tq arm mount bracket and the bushing resides in the bracket. Unless you do an aftermatket TqArm that relocates the mount elsewhere, you need the stock F-tail and bracket. I recommended the governor so your shifts will remain the same.....as long as all else is right in the tranny. The wiring inside so that the ECM controlled TCC lockup works as it did for your car.

a tpi motor should be fine w/ the vette governor
yes, the tail housing and output shaft will need to be changed, thus requiring the tear down of the entire trans.
