possibly losing tranny?

i have an 84 z with the 305 h.o. i dont know what type of tranny havent been to interested in it till now it seems like my gearing changes it self (thats the best i can explain it) some days i have loads of torque and other days i have none at all and also when i shift it into drive or overdrive it drops into gear hard, im no tranny expert but i think its gettin bad it has 3xxxxx kms on it any suggestions on if my tranny is completely screwed or if theres a few things that i can replace inside it or if this may be the rear end going?, thanks

Re: possibly loosing tranny?

Its kinda hard to understand your post. Try Again Please. It sounds like you are having issues with the 4 speed auto (700R4) transmission. Rear gears dont come and go. They either work or not. And youll know it when they break. Its (tranny) probably starting to slip and may seem worse after its driven for a while. Which could explain your random 'feel' of loss of torque

Re: possibly loosing tranny?

i knew that was comming its really hard to explain theres no noises comming from the tranny it just feels like im in the wrong gear sometimes or something simmiler to that like if im in drive it sometime feels like overdrive or maybe my carb just needs to cleaned, it dosent feel like the gears are slipping because there is no grinding noises or anything coming from them

Re: possibly loosing tranny?

It could possibly be the lockup solenoid in the tranny acting up. Sometimes it can stay locked when it shouldn't, and sometimes it can lock up if you apply power above a certain level. It tends to act up when hot. In both instances it'll bog down the engine so there's no get-up-&-go.
It's relatively cheap & easy to buy & replace it yourself.

Re: possibly loosing tranny?

He is asking if there is a difference when the shifter is in D while driving as opposed to OD while driving

Re: possibly loosing tranny?

alrigth, here is what they ^^^ are tellign you to do.

Drive around with it in drive, like normal.

Drive around in 3rd gear, by selecting it youself (so it doesn't shift into OD)

If it is fine in 3rd, but not in OD, then like they say, you may be having a problem with the TC lockup solenoid

Re: possibly losing tranny?

No third, are you sure...? I guess it would be beneficial if you could positively identify the tranny. If you do a google you'll find descriptions of how the diifferent pans look.
If you have a tranny with a lockup capable converter, then there is a connector on the drivers side, going to a solenoid inside. It is accessible by dropping the pan, and is held with just one (or two) bolt(s).
When activated it directs fluid to a clutch lining inside the converter so it locks the crankshaft direcly to the tranny, stopping the slip in the converter. It saves fuel and heat, and sometimes feels like an extra gear when it engages.

Re: possibly losing tranny?

I just skimmed through everybodys replies but also look at the mounts, as they are 23 years old and probably barely still there. Motor and Trans mounts can make a car slam into gear hard when it's put into drive. **** I'd rather have to replace the mounts than the trans. Just an idea to check out while you are under the car.
