TCI 700r4
I was thinking about buying one of tci's street fighter 700r4's. Is anybody running a tci trans? Had any problems with the trans or the company?
Re: TCI 700r4
Never used one myself, but it seems like a few people on the forums are. Here's one thread you might find of interest:

Re: TCI 700r4
Thanks for the post. Thats why I wanted to ask you guys since I see that not a lot of guys are running them.
Do B&M transmissions have the same problem or do they make a better product?

Re: TCI 700r4
Whats the problem with b&m?
----------
I see alot of guys on here running probuilt transmissions or a raptor transmission. I am just trying to figure out who make a good trans. because I am having some issues with my bowtieoverdrives trans now. Hopefully when I save up enough money I want to replace it with a quality trans.

I can't really speak from first hand experience, as I still have my stock 700R4 until it grenades, but there are countless posts with nothing but positive feedback for Dana at Probuilt. I know ProBuilt will get my business when I decide to upgrade.

Re: TCI 700r4
ha yeah thats what I heard about B&M but I wasn't sure. I know a while back one of my friends had an elcamino with a b&m shift kit. Even while he was drving slow in the parking lot and the trans would shift from 1-2 the tires would chirp.
So from what you guys are saying probuilt is a good trans. Hopefully they can set up the trans for what I need so I don't have to go through the hassle of calling back for another governer, changing the springs and all the other stuff.

Re: TCI 700r4
My TCI streetfighter lasted 1 year before smoking the 3-4pack.
I rebuilt my original trans (I kept it) with eagle frictions (9 in the 3-4 pack) and a seal/bushing kit. New 13 vane pump....
That trans lasted alot longer but the "High perf" B&M torque converter fragged and filled the trans with shavings. Tranny is still OK but I swapped in a 6 speed anyway.
I don't have much to say good about either, just make sure when you get a high performance torque converter to get a 9" converter (I should have listened)
Pics of the homebrew tanny rebuild at http://stinker.serveftp.net:8000/700r4.htm
There's a whole lot of 'tricks' in the pictures that replaced many "specialty" tools that everyone says YOU NEED to rebuild a 700r4. It wasn't easy but as long as you organize a clean area to lay all the parts out to work on (I don't recommend a garage, I used a furnished room with a good desk with plenty of light. If your wife/other kills you it's not my fault
And another tip is to not put the teardown and the buildup off. Do it in one furious shot while the whole deal is fresh in your head. If I had to come back to put it together a year later I would have forgot how to!!!

Re: TCI 700r4
pro built or raptor. - performabuilt seems to be gaining a good name also.
TCI & B&M build mail-order junk. They have yet to step into the real-world to embrace the technological differences of a 700r vs an old school T350 or T400.
PATC(raptor) has a great listing of the problems and proper corrections to build a performance 700r4. Dana from Pro Built posts here on the boards often and is very knowledgible and very helpful, often even when it's not one of his trans'.

Re: TCI 700r4
Thanks for all the input guys. At least now I know what companies I should be looking at. Right now I have an 88 iroc with an all stock L98. I want to add heads, cam an intake to it with in the next year. 99% of the time I drive on the street. I want to build and tourque monster so I want a trans that will take the abuse that I have planned for it.

Does anyone have a raptor or patc 700r4? How does the trans operate? Do you like the results of the trans?

Re: TCI 700r4
Back from the dead. I like the PATC websites multiple caches of info, theres not a lot that leaves you guessing.
Right now I am debating on doing the rest of the car and leaving the 305 alone until I figure out what to do about it.
So yeah, back to the question.. Who uses PATC products?

I've ordered parts from PATC and chatted on the phone with them about cars for 10-15 minutes.
Good knowledgeable people.

Re: TCI 700r4
I am having trouble finding anything other than inquiries about them. From being a tech and reading about the parts they use I agree with a lot they have to say (all tho some may want different clutches and steels) but at any rate, I am interested in one of their converters, particularly the Mega Raptor -1 unit that has a nice size, good tq multiplication, bearings and a nice big clutch with good clutch material.

Re: TCI 700r4
If you decide to purchase a trans from them let us know how it works out.
I installed a bowtie overdrives level 2 700r4 and 2200rpm stall. After some intial shifting problems and adjusting the tv cable I have been satisfied with the trans.

I am reading up on bowtie overdrives as we speak and I am finding they may not be the best people to spend $1500.00 with. Im happy it ended up working out for you, they def. have the best prices.

Re: TCI 700r4
Actually EDIT: I am finding all sorts of crap about Bowtie Overdrives, im abandoning my interest. Apparently there are a a HANDFUL of folks at Pro Touring and if you do a google search there are more. Everything from transmission failure with less HP than transmission is said to handle to shoddy salesmanship to bad packaging on another site. NO THANKS!

Re: TCI 700r4
Hmm I didn't know that. I haven't had any bad luck after the initial problems I mentioned. At any rate I still would like to know if you decide to go with PATC. When I finally am able to get some money saved up I will probably have to get another trans to take the tourque. Has anybody purchased a trans from PATC?
