200r4?
will a 200r4 transmission work on a 1984 barlinetta with a 305? it came off of a 305 engine but I dont know what kind of vehicle it was in. I found it for about $40.
edit: now that I have been reading I am confused is the transmission a "200-r4" or a "200-4r"?

Re: 200r4?
It's a 200-4R. It's a B.O.P. tranny, but it came in some Chevy cars. If it had a Chevy 305 in front of it, it probably came out of a Malibu, Monte Carlo, or El Camino. You would have get a new crossmember or modify the one you have. The 200-4r's only came in the 89' turbo T/A's. F-Bodies also have specific tailshafts, so the torque arm can be mounted. I mentioned the 89' TTA because it's 200-4R's tailshaft had the tq. arm provisions with it. You'll need a new driveshaft as well. You might be able to use the driveshaft from an 82' F-body with a THM200C 3spd auto. The 200C,THM350,and the 200R4 have similar dimensions.

Re: 200r4?
Typically the 2004R and 700R4 share similar dimensions. I have swapped them in G-body cars before and changed nothing. The mount was in the same spot and the driveshafts are the same as well. Just a little bending to the transmission oil lines.
The TTA didn't use a special 2004R with a tailshaft provision. It used a Grand National transmission and a special crossmember that mounted the torque arm to the crossmember, very much like a SPOHN aftermarket unit.

Re: 200r4?
well the car doesn't have a driveshaft either XD. on the bright side this car is a project so I will have plenty of time to figure it out.
so could I use the crossmember from a tta if I can find one in the junkyard?

Re: 200r4?
Yes, absolutely.
You won't find one anywhere. You'll have more luck finding a used spohn setup. I made a similar setup the first time I ran a 2004R in a 3rd gen. With a mig welder and some free time, you can too.
You need a piece of plate steel (I used 3/8") that you will drill the holes in to match the torque arm where it bolts to the tranny. Drill the holes. Bolt the new plate, the old mount insert, and the torque arm together. Bolt up your assembly to the rear end. Put a floor jack under the center of the torque arm and jack it up until your new plate is centered along side of the tailshaft of the transmission. If you don't have your transmission installed already, then you are just guessing and will throw off your pinion angle of your rear end. Once you have your torque arm in place with the jack, you use a piece of angle iron and weld it to your new plate on the top and the tranny crossmember at the bottom.
It's backyard, but it worked for me. If I run another 2004R, I'll buy the spohn unit...

Re: 200r4?
so your saying buy a spohn unit or learn to weld... well I want to learn to weld anyway... but I would prefer not learning by accidentally torching my project...

$400 for a new spohn unit... guess its time to start saving... or to start looking for a 700r4
hows this one look? http://tampa.craigslist.org/pts/451878963.html

Re: 200r4?
You need a 700r4 to start with from a third gen because it will have a removable tailshaft housing that has the torque arm mountbolt pattern cast into it. You can get one off of this site in the classifieds or you can go junkyard hunting.
Once a transmission costs more than 100 bucks used, it's time to save for a rebuilt unit. If you're looking in the Tampa area, there's a guy on ebay who sells rebuilt units for about 800 bucks, good to 450 ft-lbs.

Re: 200r4?
so If i can find a used one for under $100 It would be a decent deal. I dont mind rebuilding one. I would actually prefer it that way.

Re: 200r4?
There are lots of cheap transmissions for sale here. I have bought them myself with good results.
Most junkyards can sell you a core transmission for less than 100 bucks. Just remember that you need a tailshaft housing from a third gen for your torque arm. In fact, you should find that first and then grab any 700r4 you can get cheap.
When you rebuild it, you will need to upgrade certain internals, like the sun shell and front pump. You can read about it in the tranny section.
Good luck!
