OK, ill tell you, my T5 is behing a 383 with fully ported and polished heas, 10 to 1, XE cam with 238/242 duration, RPM air gap and a holley 750. It is alive so far for some reason, no problems, but i am on radials and a stock clutch. I dont power shift ither. My setup should be around 500 HP. I whooped a 02 firehawk feom a dig, i even have 2.73 with posi, so yea, some hold up to a real motor, some go down in flames behind a 5 litre boat anchor. Sooo....do you feel lucky punk...well do ya? LOL
Re: will borg t5 hold up to 500lbs of torque?
if it is good shape, it will hold for a while. When it breaks there will likely be nothing left to save, except the shifter. A "beefed" T5 will handle it a bit longer, but will still break, again leaving nothing but the shifter.
If you're looking for race only, kick up an old-school 4-speed. Simplicity and strength for much less than a good T56. If you want to highway it, look into a good T56 or TKO. Personally, I don't like the TKO because it won't powershift.
