Hey there, I am in need of some help. I have a 2.8 Chev MPFI v6 and 700R4 tranny in my Suzuki Samurai. It was donated by a 1987 Firebird before the guy sent it to the scrap yard. My problem is that the Tranny let go on the freeway at about 65 MPH. I pulled over and I lost everything except 1st gear and reverse as long as I manually put in 1st. In drive or O/drive there is nothing there. Is this tranny rebuildable or do I toss it? I bought another tranny but I believe it is newer but not sure, will it work? I purchased a rebuild kit, tech manual, vett sevo, boost valves and some other stuff for the 87 700r4 but I am not sure if it will work in the newer one. I do not really intent to ever go over 40 mph so I am confused in the differance. Is one stronger than the other? which one is going to work?

Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreaciated!

I am not a transmission guy, but have had two 700R4 transmissions in two vehicles to die, and both of them started off by loosing OD, then drive, then 2nd. First and reverse still worked. Had both units rebuilt without any problems. It had something to do with the pump and clutches, and loss of pressure to the clutches. Maybe some of the others can give you something more technical.

 

My tranny did not go slowly, there was a thud and the engine revved out in a violent way. Then there was nothing but me coasting to the edge of the road. I was only a couple miles from home so I crawled down the highway and parked it! It still starts and it will move as long as I use manual 1st or reverse.
