Auto trans troubles

Hey guys,

I have an issue with my trans. It is a 700R4 behind an L98 completely stock besides headers and exhaust. Today when I was driving home from work the trans would not shift normally. It only shifted around 3200 rpm and shifted very hard. I checked the fluid and it looked good, but a little low, just on the bottom end of the cross marks. I added a little fluid and it seemed to shift a little better, but still shifted into gear very hard from park. Whether shifted manually or automatically it still only shifted at high rpm's and hard. When I stepped on it a little when close to the house it made a slight whirring noise and then would not shift out of second gear no matter how many rpm's. It is not leaking any fluid and as far as I can tell it is not running hot. These problems came on suddenly and the trans has not given me any problems earlier. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Re: Auto trans troubles

Just a little more info on the car. I pulled on the tv cable and it moves about 3/4 of an inch with good tension and springs right back into position. I don't think the cable could misadjust itself all on its own in such a short period of time, a matter of 8 hours. I did a search on this and found it could be one of three things: 1.TV Cable broken or out of whack 2.Governor gear stripped, or 3. Serious mechanical failure. I found other posts with similar symptoms, but never any answer to what the problem was. Prolly gonna drop the car off at the tranny shop, but wanted to see if this could be an easy fix.

Re: Auto trans troubles

I'd look at that TV cable before I went tearing into the transmission looking for trouble.

When I had my throttle valve cable issues, my '89 behaved EXACTLY like how yours is!

Re: Auto trans troubles - Follow up

So heres what happened with the tranny. The day I went to drop it off the car shifted into gear nice and smooth, but didn't want to shift out of first gear. It held first for a while at 4K rpms then seemed to shift right into overdrive, kinda weird. Then it shifted fine the whole way down to the shop. Had the guy take a look and found something is generating some very fine metal shavings. The entire magnet was covered as well as some clutch material at the bottom of the pan. Something was just clogged up and with a new fluid and filter change I am back in business, but probably not for long. Will keep you all posted when I am pickin up parts off the side of the road.
