What fluid should I be using in a 89 Pontiac trans am T5?

I have always though that it should be a gear oil. GL-3.

Then I just heard that some T-5's should be using ATF. Whats up with that?

Also, do you guys have any tips about jiggling the T5 into the bell housing? It doesn't seem to want to line up even with the tool.

Thanks guys!

Should be ATF in that trans model (2nd design T-5).

Not sure "what's up"? That's just the way it is.

Yes. ATF.

Dex 2 is obsolete. Hasn't been made in years. You can't buy it any more AFAIK. At least, I haven't seen any on shelves for about 10 years or something.

Any kind is fine.

The '83 to '87 Camaros had the NWC-T5 (NonWorld Class T-5) or sometimes referred to as the STD-T5 (Standard T-5) transmission. This tranny's blocking rings used brass (some say bronze) synchronizers.
This tranny did use 70W gear oil.

The '88 to '92 Camaros had the WC-T5 (World Class T-5) transmission. This tranny's blocking rings use fiber synchronizers. These required the use of ATF fluid (Dextron II) as gear oil could cause them damage.

Z28er had an '84, and if the tranny is original (NWC-T5), it would have taken 70W gear oil, not ATF.

So, somebody that doesn't really know what they're talking about, posts something somewhat inaccurate on the Internet (I know, I know, you can't post things on the Internet if they're not true, right?), maybe a long time ago.

Will that cause the oil companies to go back and begin producing a fluid that's been superseded for a decade or more now?

I'm guessing ..... probably not.

Use what you can get. It doesn't matter. Better than running it dry.
