Shift question

Hey to all! I got a question about the way my 85 T/A shifts sometimes. My car is a basic, stock, 305, with carb. It also has the stock 700r tranny...absolutely no mods....oh, and 93k miles. I've noticed that the car shifts into upper gear and overdrive pretty quickly...sometimes it leaves the car kinda bogged feeling. I had another 85 years ago that did it really bad. This one is better than the other one was, but it still seems to shift kinda early...under normal driving. If I'm kinda pushing it a little, it seems to do better. I've heard of other people having this problem, but never really got a good explanation of what causes this. Any info for me?

Re: Shift question

may need to have the tv cable adjusted. you could also change the governor to one from a 'vette. this would help raise the shift points.

Re: Shift question

Mine does the same when adjusted properly but if i push the adjuster in 1 or 2 clicks the trans holds gears a little longer. Will adjusting it this way hurt the trans?

This increases the line pressure, which usually isn't a problem. It's when the cable is too loose, which causes low line pressure, that it becomes a problem. I usually adjust mine a bit on the tight side too. My trans always shifted into overdrive too soon, causing it to bog, which is pretty annoying. I got this cheap $7 tv cable corrector spring, and it dramtically increased the line pressure, and now it doesn't shift into OD until about 45-50 mph. Before I put the corrector spring in, I was always manually shifting it down into drive to keep it from bogging when going 40 mph or slower. Here's a link to the spring you need.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/700R4...mZ140074438122 There was a long post on here about 6 months ago about this spring. A lot of guys have put it on and been really pleased with the result. It's kinda like putting a $7 shift kit in your trans, and only takes a couple of minutes to do.
