shift kit question??

hi! i was just wondering, what is the point of a shift kit!? It is supposed to firm up the shifts a bit right?? But what does this do for you and the car, speeds, drivetrain loss etc.

I ask because im building a camaro with my father. I wanted to do a T56 swap because i love rowing through the gears. However, #1 rule of our build, we use what we can afford, and thats not much. He suggested that we use an old (though he tells me its pretty Bad a**. a shift kit on the more extreme side of things i guess...) shift kit that hes had laying around since he sold his old GTO before he could put it in. This would basically be a free mod since i already have a auto tranny and the shift kit.

soooo.. whats the benefits of each side of the coin, and honestly, what is a shift kit. I'm not really sure i understand all of what goes into it and what the results are.

Thank you so much for helping my poor un-educated self! Hopefully ill remember what i learn!
