tranny slipping
tranny slipping
so months back i got an 86 z28 and now im finding problem after problem. heater core busted, radiator blown, misfiring, exhaust leak, short circuit. so now i was bummed when this happened. i had just changed the radiator but i had happened to forgot to put one of the clamps on the upper hose (stupid me) and i was driving and the car started spitting out coolant in the engine compartment and i could smell it and then i saw the temp gauge started creeping towards red. but as i was driving while the car was hot i felt the transmission was slipping, i was going up hill at the time. then the car turned off on me so i turned it back on and parked it before the needle hit the red on the gauge. so i look under the hood and the hose had blown. but what i was most worried about was the tranny slipping on me on the way to parking it. it was behaving so crazy. it was slipping pretty nasty. i was short on alittle tranny fluid when i checked. perhaps a quart.
do you think the overheating of the engine contributed to the slipping in the tranny? or perhaps the shortage of tranny fluid and the overheater are both the cause of the problem? im seriously thinking of getting the tranny rebuilt after this

Re: tranny slipping
Heat is the #1 enemy of a tranny...any tranny. That being said, any slippage does damage to your trans as well. Being low on fluid and climbing a hill can cause a tranny to slip. The combination of these two may have just fried your tranny good.
1. FIX your radiator.
2. Top off your tranny on a level location.
3. Check the fluid - look at it...is it brown? smell it...does it smell burnt?
If 2 and 3 are OK, keep driving till it's time is up...you may be able to use it long enough to save your cash for a rebuild. Don't skimp on a tranny rebuild...you can do it yourself and learn or pay someone else..either way, buy good parts and get good advise.
