4th gen rear

I am wondering what would be better for my car and most cost effective. Re build the 10bolt i have and put in posi,3.73 gears, new axles. Or by a 4th gen for $350 it already has posi and a 3.42 gear and freshin it up. And how hard is it to get the 4 gen in my 84 Z28?

Re: 4th gen rear

The 4th gen is 2" wider. But, should bolt right in. May have to "adjust" the brake lines, some had 4 circuit ABS, and independently controlled rear brakes. Also, I am unsure of the E-brake cables.

Re: 4th gen rear

the 3.42s in an auto if thats what u have is plenty high 3.73 are nice if u like no gas milage and not driving on the highway. if ur gunna do the swap make sure u have the resources and read the tech articles they help alot. other then that all i can say is its a direct bolt in and try to get a rear out of a car that didnt have traction control. good luck and my votes for the 4th gen rear. o almost forgot the 4th gen rear will cost so much less then doing all that to ur 3rd gen rear.

its also a good opertunity to throw in a umi ajustable panhard bar.

Re: 4th gen rear

OK so im going towards the 4th gen rear. I have found one for $350. My question is are these rearends only as good as are 3rd gen rears because thats what im hearing. Im pushing out 400hp and I dont want to replace everything if I romp on my car a couple times. The rear is out of a 2000 WS6 Transam how go is this rearend and yes it does have traction control on it.Thanks for the help.

With my current combo I am suppose to have a minimum of a 3.73 gear and I do have a 3000 stall. Will the 3.42 gear be able to get me into my powerband fast enough ?
