406sbc tranny option
I was wondering what I can use for a tranny behind my 406 sbc? It's a staggered bolt pattern block so it must use a 168tooth flywheel. Can I use a t56 or a tko tranny?

Re: 406sbc tranny option
Drill the hole in the block.
Think about it..... compare the cost and effort of a trans swap, to drilling a hole.
A T-56 will require the late-model starter and its late-model bolt hole.
Here's a 400 block with the bolt hole you need added to it.

Note that it's a "special" hole, with its unusual feature quite visible in the pic, like the OE holes. It has a sort of "entry" to it, that the equally "special" starter bolt itself, has a shoulder on its shank to form a "dowel pin" arrangement to positively locate the starter. It's about 3/8" deep and IIRC 13/32" diameter.
Have your machine shop drill it before you install the engine into the car. It's much easier to get it in the perfect right place that way, perfectly located and perfectly perpendicular to the block and otherwise PERFECT, than it is to try to do that laying on your back fighting frames, control arms, and whatever all else.
Then you can use any transmission you want to.

Probably....
The block in the pic had that size flywheel on it for about 12 years and 140,000 miles. (T-5 car) If it worked for me, it'll most likely work for you.
