does the tps affect the way a car shifts?
Hey
I have a 91 Z28. All stock with the 350 TPI. When i got the car the guy said he put a new tpi sensor on it..by himself. Since I have had it, it always idled kind of high(maybe 1200). But anyway the kick down cable for the tranny is adjusted to where its in about as far as it goes. Sometimes at 40-45 mpg range it at a steady pace it will want to buck on me like its trying to bounce between gears, and also when its in overdrive the rpms seem somewhat higher than they should be. So I was wondering if having the Throttle Position sensor not adjusted just perfect would make the car not shift properly. I did back the kickdown cable out once to see what happened, and it shifted very hard just puttin it into drive. so i wasnt sure if the car may be just giving my tranny issues...as in maybe needing rebuilt? i did however change the fluid and filter..so its new.

the cable you are talking about is a throttle valve cable (tv cable) and this does affect how early, late, hard, or soft the trans shifts. if not adjusted properly it can have adverse affects on your trans. to properly adjust your cable set the adjustment all the way in. with the car off give it full throttle and the cable should ratchet out. it also sounds like your tps is out of adjustment. this sensor should not affect when your trans. shifts, that is what the govenor is for.

adjust the tv cable ,push it in with a screwdriver in right hand ,take left hand push center black piece in as far as it will go ,let off screwdriver so it holds it in place.now take your hand and open throttle to wide open position, you should hear a series of clicks ,center black piece will ratchet out, make sure throttle is in wide open position, take it down the street and see how it changes, later jimmy

hey
yeah....i did that a few months ago cause a mechanic told me to try that. But when i put it into drive, the tranny jerked hard....thats why i was thinking maybe it was the tps out of adjustment. i adjusted the tps down today so im gonna check and see if that makes a difference any. may of been to high of an idle when i tried adjusting the tv cable.
