Knocking Noise when In Gear
Hey guys,
When I'm in gear i get a knocking noise that gets faster with speed (not rpm).
When i'm rolling and i push the clutch in and leave it in gear it stops, also when i'm in neutral.
This is in all gears, at all speeds.
What could it be, a friend of mine said rear end, but thats relatively new.
But then again I got my rear from Chris Caprio who isn't exactly getting rave reviews.
Anyone have this problem or know whats up?
Thanks
Tim

Definitely something in your trans, I'd drain the fluid and look for metal.

yeah i was thinking either the throwout bearing or clutch fork or something...
going to take it to the shop today so hopefully it's nothing too major.
thanks guys,
Tim

Re: Knocking Noise when In Gear
Sounds like broken or chipped teeth on the gears inside the trans to me. Only one gear has to have broken teeth for it to happen since no matter what gear you're in, all of them spin against the big cluster gear. I broke 2nd gear in my Muncie a few years ago, and it did the same thing your car is doing. I'd recommend not driving it until you figure out the problem. I got lucky and only had to replace 2nd gear since I took it straight home and parked it. If you keep driving it with a broken gear, it'll take out the cluster gear, which is expensive to replace.

Re: Knocking Noise when In Gear
Well, my friend was right...
something in the center section of my rear is shot.
so i'm having the whole center section rebuilt with new gears at Action Performance in Bohemia, NY. i learned my lesson from buying from unreliable sources from the internet.
time to scrounge up some cash!
mission: trans delayed once again lol
Thanks guys

Makes sense if its on the load side of a tooth. Turned it by hand and felt it?
