GTA 700r4 trans removal question.

Hey. I am going to apologize in advance for the dumb question.

I have never removed a trans from a vehicle with a torque arm. Does the t. arm have to come off the rear end or can it just be unbolted from the transmission?

Thanks.

Re: GTA 700r4 trans removal question.

Assuming its the same as my 92 Z28, I just took my transmission out today to replace w/a higher stall converter. The Torque arm was the first thing to be removed completely, there are 2 long bolts going straight down in the rear axle housing area that need to be removed. (May require lifting/lowering rear axle to get proper angles to get the bolts out. Secondly, removing the torque arm mount in front with 1 bolt higher up that releases the 'Torque arm mount' housing to pivot down. Take the whole rubber piece out with the torque arm. Then remove the cross brace of the transmission & make SURE YOU SUPPORT it before you start to drop it.

**edit, its helpful to remove the driveshaft too on where it goes into the rear axle. (4) 7/16 bolts that hold 2 caps on.

if you remove the 2 large bolts that hold the torque arm to the dif, it will then just pull out of the trans mount, no need to try and remove the bracket form the trans.

Out of the trans mount? The trans mount is above the cross brace, i'm talking about the torque arm mount. But still, like he says your application may be different where you can just pull it through. Mine was stuck on, even though being just a year old. If yours comes out like he says, all the more better. Worst case is you'd have to take that one bolt out. Sorry for not clarifying.

No not the trans mount.

What i meant was that if you unbolt the torque arm from the axle, you can pull the torque arm out of the torque arm bracket and remove the torque arm. There is no reason to remove the torque arm bracket from the trans

Thanks guys. Since I have to change the fuel pump anyways I might as well drop the rear end to make it easier.

I have to do this today, its hard when your facing cramped quarters and good old northern rusted bolts. Should be a long day...but yeah, that torque arm is really strange thing. Does anybody know what this thing actually does ?
