How many hours does it usually take to uninstall a trannie and put in a new one?

well putting the car on 4 jack stands, tq bolts (3 of them), drive shaft, chassie support bar, mounts and bellhousing bolts with a decent set of tools...
2-3 hours max.. it helps to have two people, one to guide the tranny in and the other person to muslce the beast into place...
but it can be done with just one, just you'll have to keep going up n checking n making sure your not pinching any wires n have the proper clearance/posistion.

When I did my 1st tranny removal (700r4), took almost 2 1/2 hours using a lift and tranny jack. Took another 3 to 3 1/2 hours to install the tranny. All this by myself and using a Chiltons manual. Saved alot of money doing the removal and installation as well as gaining confidence on working on cars. Working in a garage with 4 wheels on jackstand, a floor jack and another person should take about 2 1/2 hours. Make sure to get a long enough extension to reach the 2 upper bolts that connect the tranny to the motor.
it all depends on your skills, tools, etc. my first ever tranny removal and install, probably took 5 hours. i think average would be about 2-2.5 hours.
although i did one in 45 minutes....but that was with three people, a lift, and all the tools already laid out

u could use a cherry picker, if you torch off your roof and your front end and your floor =]
no u can buy a regular floor jack and have someone weld a plate (like a foot long by a foot wide) and drill two holes on each side to slip bolts through them to chain the tranny down onto the plate..
can never be to safe, but a cheap wal-mart floor will work...

just a jack. just dont let the engine tip back once you pull the tranny, it will hit the firewall and break the distributer.

I am browsing the trans removal procedure myself and keep seeing these warnings to remove the distributor. What causes the engine to fall backwards? The engine's own weight or the transmission pulling it down?
If I have the trans supported on the jack, i should be all right just sliding it out and not lowering, right?

the transmission hooked to the motor and the tranny is support by the mounts and a cross-member n not to mention the driveshaft actually supports it n keeps it straight in-line...without those to the engine, the engine will droop down..
the motor cannot fall all the way down due to the motor mounts holding it, but it could possibly break something lingering in the back of the intake.
you will have to slide the tranny out n lower it...
i had to pull n lower a lil n pull n lower a lil.. just keep an eye for cables, electronics, so on n so on and you'lll be fine...
and chain the tranny to the jack so it wont shift n fall off, tranny accidents are popular
