Rear End Moans, Why?

Hey Guys, I have a quick Question about My rear "Axle".. I have a 5 spped and when I get to High First Gear the rear goes Whooooooooooooo 2nd then goes away... Ill Admit this rear has been Beat to $hit.. One wheel Burns Out now, My friend Says the rear is On its way Out.. Another friend says something needs adjusting.. I know nothing about rears, But I do have another one Out of a camaro rs 305 v8 that the owner claims has 3.73's in them and is Posi...

Some main concerns that I need to know about... if anyone can help, thankyou

1- How do I know what rear is REALLY in that Camaro?
2- The camaro is a 1989 with Drum brakes.. I have a 1990 gta wit disk rear brakes.. is this a problem? and can the brakes be swapped?
3- this rear will fit?

Re: Rear End Moans Like My Girlfriend, Why?

interesting choice for a title.....

1. count the cover bolts, 9 its a 9 bolt, 10 its a ten bolt. Then pull the coveroff and count teeth on the gears to figure the ratio. Then see if you have a posi or just an open rear. if its posi, which its probably not, you will see some springs inside the carrier.

2 the brakes alone will not swap over, the whole rear will

3. yup, you need different e-brake cables, swap over the brake lines on the axle and you should also change over the prop valve under the brake master cylinder.

...before you all get too involved he should probably attach a sound clip of his girlfriend moaning.... ....you know it is always easier finding out a problem if we actually hear the noise!

Does the rear end appear to have any obvious oil leaks? Mine started doing that last summer - turned out it somehow was hemoraging out the pinion seal, and I ran it dry for about a week before the noise started. Oops.

Maybe they are both complaining 'cause he does not know how to work it...

Sorry someone had to go there.

Instead of swaping out the rear just swap guts if they both are 10 bolts of 9 bolts?

Re: Rear End Moans, Why?

Sorry, I had to edit the title. This site is supposed to be PG.

Car parts make noise for two reasons. One, lack of lubrication, so check the fluid level in the rear end. 10-bolts have an access hole on the right side when you're facing the cover. It should unscrew with a 3/8" ratchet. 9-bolts have a rubber plug in the cover.
The second reason they whine is because of improper setup. Too much metal on metal contact, which could also be reason number one.

Goomaan, Its Like Riding a Bicycle, Once you Learn how to " WORK IT " You Never Forget....

Swapping the Guts sounds good But I dont even Know How to do that.. Ive learned alot as I go But I really never did any rear end Diff stuff before.. Like Putting the dashbord back together was a team Effort between me and Moreen ( My Girlfriend). I could take the dash Out and Put it back In again if I Had to.. and I do Have to, I have to Pull Out My whole Interior again..
