The 700r4 has an awesome first gear 3.06, and comes with an overdrive. If your going to do any future mods to it I would rebuild it with a probuilt rebuild kit.

How good depends how you look at it.
As a street tranny, it's very good. It has the low first gear which allows you to get off the line quicker when the car has highway or slightly better gears in the diff. With the OD, you can drop the engine rpm even lower on the highway for better fuel economy.
As a performance tranny, it's not all the great. The low first gear has too much of a gear spread between first and second gear. When you do the shift at WOT, the rpms drop down below the powerband. On the dragstrip, OD is never used and it's a weak gear anyway. Installing a more performance gear ratio in the diff combined with the low first gear it can easily provide enough torque multiplication to overpower the tires.
