Is this diff worth installing?

Hi all,

I wondered if anyone could advise me on whether installing the following diff is worth the potential pain or not.

I got hold of the following items shipped to the UK for just over 200 dollars, and I searched for some model numbers I am not sure about installing.

The unit is exactly the same (including case id) as this one:

This topic from 2003 has made me think otherwise https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...tify-posi.html

Is anyone running with this diff without problems. (I think Ed was using this diff back then)

If I needed to upgrade would a 7.5 28 spline and a diff from a 4th gen setup be good for say 450hp?

Thanks guys

Derek

Derek howdy there

i got your PM and replied with one

that one on kijji is junk its a gov-lok or better known as grenade-lok

the governor unit thingy mounted on it is the dead giveaway of this junk unit

its not even worth 20 let alone 200

run away fast,

the other one i cant tell what it is, i cant see the internals

the gov-lok was the most common limited slip unit out there in these later years, there was a cone type also but was not rebuildable

you need an auburn or an eaton clutch type posi unit

these cost 3-400 dollars

a better way is to find a complete posi rear from one of these cars

if you try to piece a rear together by trying to find and install a posi you will need special tools and knowledge to set it up properly so it wont ruin itself

these good/better units cost good money

a while back you could get left over factory later model 7.5" zexel units for 99 dollars but they ran out of them before i could pick up a few of them

good luck

Re: Is this diff worth installing?

heres a couple different posi rears you would be lots better off putting under your car and are good prices:

narrow this one a bit, good street ratio already @ 3.50 or 3.55:

3.08 but is posi and no narrowing needed probably:

good luck!

Re: Is this diff worth installing?

Thanks Randy,

I feared this would be the case as soon as I saw it..I wish I asked for some pix...

I am based in the UK which often means trying to get hold of complete rear ends can be difficult. Breaking / salvaging camaros/chevs are not too easy to come by.

I would have liked to have gone up to a larger axle but shipping a whole rear end to the UK would be insane. so I may have to stick to 7.5 but maybe I can ugrade to 28 spline shafts / posi instead..

I did consider the detriot truetrac too. they were 350+ shipping.. I may have a search on here to see if anyone else has experience of these units.

Thanks again

Derek
