Tranny problem, I think?

Firstly. I'm new to this site, and am very impressed with it! I'm also a newish tbi owner. I dont know much about these cars, but I'm reading through the posts, and trying to learn! OK the problem i have, is the transmission (700r4 I guess), is slipping as i accelerate with a whining noise before changing up each gear. once rolling at highway speeds the noise seems to stop. I checked and replaced the fluid, although the old stuff diddnt look bad. I am hoping its not going to be too expensive, but i dont know if it is the transmission at fault, or maybe the torque converter, or something else? If i need to replace the tranny/converter, will any 700r4 work? or do i need a certain type? same for the converter? The car is a '92 firebird 5l (305) tbi by the way. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Re: Tranny problem, I think?

What kind of fluid did you use? it sounds like you put the wrong kind in.

Re: Tranny problem, I think?

problem was there before the fluid change... but it was dexron 2 which was the recommended type. pretty sure its not a fluid problem, but thanks for the input!

Re: Tranny problem, I think?

Sounds like the torque converter may be on its way out.

Re: Tranny problem, I think?

these trannies are cheap to replace
its hard to diagnose this problem accurately
i would suggest
1.transmission
2.performance converter
3. with a trans go kit
4. upgrade the input drum if you can
5.make sure the t.v. shortcommings are taken care of for a healthy 3rd and 4th gear

sorry i couldnt help more but im not there with your car either
if you hear a whine first thing after low fluid i would think of is a bad pump

Re: Tranny problem, I think?

Is it more of a lag between shifts and kind drops and jerks into gear? Test the TCC solenoid. Do a search. Theres a few different tests you can do. If you cant find anything let me know.
