700R4 trans cooler? Do i need one?

K, so i was just hangin out with my buddy, who has an almsot identical car to me

We both have 85 Z28's, both came stock with LG4 (He upgraded to 350 crate though) Anyways both of our drivetrains are bone stock, we both have 700r4, same rear end, everthin.

BUT, we just noticed... he has a tranny cooler (a little rad infront of his main engine rad)....but i dont. I dont even have the little brackets for it.

Why is this? our cars were IDENTICAL rolling outta the factory (except he has more options) Was the trans cooler an optional RPO? I havent had any problems with my trans at all, but why would he have one and not me...

you have a trans cooler. its in the radiator. so does he. look at the passengerside of the radiator and you will see 2 metal tubes about 3/8 od running into the radiator, one high the other low. he may have another aftermarket cooler, or you are seeing a ac condenser or something

if you had no cooler, the trans would not last long

Oh, ok yeah i just checked. I do have lines going to the tranny from the rad.

Thanks alot, this really clears stuff up.

If i went aftermarket would it help for tranny life (i have a stock LG4) but plan on going 350 next year.

The stock trans cooler in the radiator is fine until you upgrade to a high-stall torque converter, like 2400+ rpms.
