spare rear, $50, turns out richmond posi!
so just like the title says, i bought a rear end from an 84 berli, and got it home and pulled the cover and the fluid was just about brand new, still had a green tint to it from the additive i suppose, anyways the diff looks brand new also, the gears say Richmond right on them, but the diff doesn't, so how do i tell what it is? i can see that its a clutch type posi, and the tag was still on the rear end saying to use limited slip fluid, and the gears puzzle me too, i turned the wheel one full rotation, and the drive shaft turned exactly twice, i dont get it? whats the ratio? the gears just say Richmond with a ton of numbers around the ring gear, but no ratio, any ideas?

When you want to check gearing..the CORRECT way is to turn the pinion. And watch the ring gear. It will take away any descrepencies. Maybe the posi was slipping or "unloading". Mark the ring gear with some paint or tape, then rotate the pinion/driveshaft until the ring gear makes one full revolution. The number of times the driveshaft turns at that point is your ratio.

Just count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears and divide the two numbers to get the exact ratio.

thats exacty what i thought, 2.00:1..... what? haha thats what i said, anyways im sure it only went twice, and i look on the ring gear and it says RICHMOND with a bunch of numbers all together on it, prolly about 15 digits, i cant really make sense of it, i guess ill just count the teeth, that'll be fun.... and yea it was a pretty sweet deal

Pff....counting teeth... Who likes to do that
Yes that will work too. But the easier way is by turning the pinion in my opinion. You wont get 3.xx..but you'll be able to tell. It will be a common ratio. 3.08, 3.42, 3.73 etc etc... My point was more about turning the wheel to count pinion turns. It doesnt always work. Gotta turn by the pinion.

Just write down all the numbers you can sse on the gears themselves. once you do that give Richmond's tech line a call then you will know FOR SURE what gear ratio you have and also what series carrier you have. Done deal
