code 24 and tranny problems

i just recently drove my car for the first time after rebuilding the motor and i got a code 24. the tranny is shifting all ****ed up and it even seems like its going into overdrive at 30 mph. Tried adjusting my tv cable, that just got rid of the hard shifts. Also my speedo doesnt work anymore. ??????

edit- i also installed an edge 3000 stall

Re: code 24 and tranny problems

The transmission is not electrically controlled, so the shifting problem is not the code.

Code 24 is for the vehicle speed sensor, meaning that the car is not getting a speed signal. Without it, it will not lock up the convertor and will run very strangely.

That also explains why the speedo doesnt work. IIRC the 89 has an electronic sensor mouted in the tailshaft of the transmission.

Re: code 24 and tranny problems

i got it to shift right by re setting the tv cable again. i was only cruising around the neighborhood so i couldnt fully test it. I didnt see a VSS I think it must be a mechanical speedo, I see a cable coming out the tailshaft of the tranny to the speedo

Re: code 24 and tranny problems

ok, in that case the electronic sensor is on the back of the speedometer. If it isnt working, I would first suspect a broken cable or a stripped speedo gear in the tailshaft.
The electric sensor is just for the ECM in your car.

yeah thats what i was thinking, maybe we damaged it dropping in the motor. i saw a few minor nicks on the rubber but nothing major ill disconnect the hole thing and pull the cluster and update. then its onto the steering and brake issues

Re: code 24 and tranny problems

my torque converter keeps locking up randomly i have to keep hitting the brakes to unlock it, when it locks up and i let off the gas itll hold the rpms to about 1500, then it will throw a code 24. can anyone help please?? if the speedometer is mechanical and isn't working will that affect the vss????

Re: code 24 and tranny problems

got the speedometer working and it no longer throws any codes, and the overdrive is working better but it still locks up too early and in other gears, I only want it to lock up in 4th on the highway not in city driving and WOT. is there someway i can wire a toggle switch or something off the brakes so it thinks im stepping on the brakes??

Re: code 24 and tranny problems

You can put a switch inline right after the ecm to stop it from locking up, or you can look into having somebody burn you a chip with a higher lockup speed.

The lockup speed is annoylingly low from the factory.
