Ok, i have just got an 82 trans am it has an 305 in it, the transmission only goes in backup if the car has been warmed up, The guy we got the car from says it needs a transmission flush ok, well does that explain why it doesn't kick into 4rd gear out of 3rd? it's an automatic.

If its a stock '82, then it isn't going into 4th because its only a 3spd trans. The 4spd autos started in '83.

as for the OP are you sure its full of fluid if it is then a flush is not going to help you have a mechanical issueJunior Member
Hi, I have a 1985 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta here's a link to see it http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3088924 (it's automatic) and it shifts as smooth as glass but when I put it in reverse and only in reverse it make a clicking noise. It’s not loud but it is noticeable and well what can I do? Is the trans going to give out soon? How long do i have? Please help

700r4 is known to be kinda clunky going into reverse but you might check your torque arm bushing

Check the TA bushing, then the Trans Mount, then the U-joints (in that order IMO). Something is probably up with one of those 3.Member
should be a 3 speed auto. could be low on fuid but I bet the servo is leaking.

If you look under the car, you will see a long stamped steel 'arm' that follows beside the driveshaft, connected to the transmission on one end and the rear axle at the other end. At the transmission, its held in place by a rubber bushing with a clamp on it.Originally Posted by CamaroFreak2008

Make sure the bolts are tight and nothing obviously broken. If that seems ok, then grab the front of the torque arm (trans end is the front) and move it up and down, too see if or how much play/slop there is. There should be none. It should be able to move a little bit, as the mount is rubber, but it should not move around loose inside the bushing (bad explanation of that, I'm sorry, lol).
